Aurora Philosophy Club Meetup Registration

Hi Everyone,

We recently started a Meetup page which we're going to be using alongside the Aurora Philosophy Club website.  The reason for starting the Meetup site is threefold -- to promote the Aurora Philosophy Club beyond Aurora, to increase membership, as well as interact with other philosophy clubs and possibly share ideas for presentations.

The purpose of this email is to encourage all currently signed up members to signup with the Aurora Philosophy Club Meetup page as well.  Doing so will help us with future programming and membership notifications.

Here is the link to the philosophy club Meetup Site.

Aurora Philosophy Club Meeting Reminder -- November 26, 2019

Hi Everyone,

This is a reminder that the next Aurora Philosophy Club meeting will be held on November 26 between 7-9 pm in the Multi-Use-Room (which is on the second floor) of the Aurora Public Library.

At the upcoming meeting we are honored to have Dr. Brenda Spotton, a professor of economics at York University, come speak to the club. We hope you can join us on what promises to be a fascinating discussion.
Here's a brief description from Dr. Spotton of what she'll be covering:

"The virtual absence of differentiated social location in social theorizing has critical implications for public policy. A grounding in models that assume individuals are simply “rational” beings, regardless of gender, race, and other markers of a social self, privileges naturalist assumptions and claims. For example, attempts by feminist economists to shine a light on non-marketed activities traditionally performed by women do so by suggesting we monetize the values of such contributions as caregiving. In this talk, we explore the implications of an interpretivist view of our material well-being that permits the construction of social reality as a challenge to the dominant view wherein theorizing and policy-making simply reflect on, and act within, an objective external reality."

Brenda Spotton Visano is Distinguished University Professor in Economics and Public Policy at York University. Her widely published interdisciplinary scholarship advances a heterodox perspective on macroeconomics and microfinance. Her passion for promoting access and diversity in theories, practices, and professional conduct in economics and finance lies at the core of her scholarly and professional engagements. Some of the questions that motivate this talk were originally explored in her scholarly publication “Gendering Post-Keynesian Monetary Macroeconomics with Situated Knowledge”
(2017).

We are looking to have a great turnout for for what promises to be an excellent presentation so everyone is highly encouraged to attend.

Looking forward to seeing you all on the 26th of November.

Regards,

The Aurora Philosophy Club Steering Committee

Aurora Philosophy Club Meeting Reminder -- Tuesday October 22, 2019

Hi Everyone,

This is a quick reminder that the next Aurora Philosophy Club meeting will be held on October 22, 2019 between 7 - 8:30 pm in the Optimist Room (located on the second floor) of the Aurora Public Library.

For this meeting we will have the first ever Agora Night. As you may know the word Agora (pronounced ah-go-RAH) is Greek for 'open place of assembly' and, early in the history of Greece, designated the city's marketplace where citizens bought and sold goods, discussed politics, military campaigns, as well as philosophical ideas. Some of the most revered philosophers to frequent the Agora include Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle.

This meeting will include a variety of presentations by various club members, meant to pique your philosophical curiosity, on various subjects relevant to our day-to-day life.

This should be a very interesting night and we hope to see you all there.

Regards,

The Aurora Philosophy Club Steering Committee

Aurora Philosophy Club Meeting Reminder #2 -- September 24, 2019

Hi Everyone,

Just a quick reminder that the first meeting of the season is this coming Tuesday, between 7-8:30 pm in the Magna Room of the Aurora Public Library. For this first meeting we are privileged to have the well-known radio personality David Basskin come and speak to us about Jazz and the Cold War. Just in case you're not familiar with David Basskin here's a brief biography and a bit of information about the presentation this Tuesday:

David Basskin is the host of The Nightfly starting in September on JAZZ.FM91. He created and hosted Stolen Moments on the station from 2007 to 2018. David has been a musician, a lawyer and the CEO of Canada's largest music licensing agency. He brings a lifetime of love for jazz and its unexpected history to this talk.

Cold War Jazz tells the story of what happened when US politicians showed some unexpected love for America's greatest music and musicians. Aiming to counter Soviet rhetoric decrying American racism, the State Department recruited Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong, Dave Brubeck and other great players to tell a more positive story -- through their music. Very little turned out as expected!

Looking forward to seeing you all this coming Tuesday.

Aurora Agora Night -- October 22, 2019

Hi Everyone,

On October 22nd the Aurora Philosophy Club will host the first Aurora Agora Night.

The idea underlying the Agora Night is to have members of the philosophy club volunteer to do a short presentation (no more than 10-15 minutes) on a subject that is of interest to them, and which has the potential to be discussed philosophically.

If you have an interest in doing a presentation, please send an email to reelstories@rogers.com with a brief description of what you'd like to do and you will be contacted with further information. Just so you know, the subject that you choose to present does not need to be explicitly philosophical. The idea is to generate conversation among club members and to let philosophical connections emerge through dialogue.

Looking forward to hearing from interested participants.

Regards,

Ronen and the Aurora Philosphy Club Steering Committee
